Module 5: Your Library 
You will need to know more about UNSW Library, such as where to find books and journals or how to use the online Library resources.
This module will give you information about how to use the Library more effectively.
Read the learning outcomes for this module.
UNSW's fourth Library is the Academy Library at UNSW@ADFA, the Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra.
Undergraduate students at UNSW@ADFA are members of the Australian Defence Forces.
Knowing the Library
UNSW has three libraries
- Main Library, Kensington campus
- Freehills Law Library, Kensington campus
- College of Fine Arts Library (COFA), Paddington campus
Library tours
- tours are held at the beginning of session, commencing in orientation week
- tours are run in each Library
Where is it?
Main Library
Books: Levels 3 to 10.
Journals: interfiled with books on Levels 3 to 10.
Freehills Law Library
Books: Ground Floor.
Reference & primary materials: 1st Floor.
Journals: Ground Floor.
College of Fine Arts Library
Books: 2nd Floor.
Reference materials: 1st Floor.
Bound journals:
1st Floor.
Recent issues of journals: 2nd Floor.
- tours will help familiarise you with each Library, pointing out the location of the collection, MyCourse Reserve, computers, printers, photocopiers, study rooms, media booths (and how to book them) and the Information Desk
- seminars are also offered early in the session
Accessing Library materials online
- UNSW Library provides computers for student use
- the Library’s electronic resources are accessible via the Library’s home page. This means you can access many resources from home. If you experience problems, check our Access requirements
- you will be able to access the Library anywhere on campus from a laptop via the Uniwide Wireless Network
Accessing the Library’s print collection
The Library’s physical collection is organised by call number into subjectareas on the shelves, using classification systems:
- Main Library and COFA use the Dewey Decimal Classification system (DDC)
- Freehills Law Library uses the Moys Classification scheme

Books on Library shelves are generally available for four weeks loan, subject to recall if reserved by other Library users.
As some material is only available in print, you will need to come into the Library to access it.
